Responding to COVID-19 Wellness

Is this the pandemic we needed to have?

Eventually everyone will be exposed. The weak, the sick and the most vulnerable will succumb. The current ‘lock down’ may delay the collapse of modern healthcare systems yet modern health systems are already struggling under the weight of chronic disease and collapse maybe delayed for a few months or more, but collapse is inevitable. Once the health system breaks down, other societal structures will follow.

Existing societal structures need to break down, and then be consciously (re)created. We have known for decades that our modern lifestyles can’t continue and the current public hysteria reflects our realization that societal breakdown is immanent and direct personal action is needed now.

The pandemic has the potential to devastate communities, not because it is so virulent, but because of people’s reactions to it. This is often the case in human illness, where the bodies reaction to an infection causes more harm than the infectious agent.

Social distancing will help deal with the immediate outbreak, yet the associated uncertainty, social isolation and societal upheaval will create considerable anxiety and depression and cause a dramatic decline in mental health.

The pandemic will force people to focus on what’s really important and realise we are all in this together.

The important things are our health, our family and relationships, clean, water, air and soil and having meaningful activity to give us a sense of purpose.

The best defense against infection is being ‘well’.

Rather than losing hope, or succumbing to fear or hysteria, we need to support each other in becoming more conscious of how we live and making healthy lifestyle choices.

We all need to take responsibility for our individual and collective wellbeing and ‘live well’. This means living beautifully, gracefully, and in harmony with each other and the planet.

We are not there yet.

The need for change has never been so great, yet the pace of change and the tools at our disposal have never been more powerful.

Humanity is now taking a collective pause and entering a liminal state. We are all being forced to go within and cocoon ourselves away as we transform into a conscious global community.

As the world goes into lock down and we become more isolated, it will also become obvious we are not alone, and our fate is inextricably linked to the rest of the world.

Things could end up bad, yet it could also end up wonderful beyond our wildest imagination.

Everything is figuroutable! We can turn panic into preparedness, problem-solving, and purposeful action.

The best response to a global pandemic is to create a wellness epidemic. Just as hysteria can damage a community, it is possible for wellness memes to go viral and infect the world with good health. It is possible for the wellness industry become the dominant industry on earth.

Our responses to the pandemic can mitigate climate change, reduce the burden of chronic disease and build a healthy global community.

Massive global transformation is happening in our lifetime. Sadly, many lives will be lost in the process.

Our greatest hope is to realise worldwide wellness.

It sure beats the alternative. . .
